Painting Without Rules

There are no rules. That is how art is born, how breakthroughs happen. Go against the rules or ignore the rules. That is what invention is about.
— Helen Frankenthaler

There is more than one way to approach art. Some people take the traditionalist approach. This approach is rule-based, with the goal of creating naturalistic art. While others, like Helen Frakenthaler, prefer a modernist approach. This approach places more emphasis on experimentation, individualism, and creativity. I follow the modernist approach but don’t wholly reject the rules. So, I will use things like perspective and color theory from time to time. But I consider these things as choices rather than rules that must be followed.

Below are some examples of my landscape paintings. Two watercolor paintings and four soft pastel paintings.

Reasons why I prefer the modernist approach:

  • I prefer the freedom it offers

  • I prefer to build my art on creativity rather than technical rules

  • it suits my personality better

I think the last point is especially important. The best approach for you will depend on your personality. Some people prefer their art to be based on tradition, rules and draughtsmanship.

The video below explores these ideas further.
